According to Shams Charania of The Athletic ( Twitter link ), the Warriors will begin their title defense season by hosting the Lakers on the opening night of the 2022/23 campaign. As Charania said, Golden State will also award championship rings to those who were with the team last season. The tournament and match will be broadcast on TNT.
The Warriors are celebrating their fourth title in the last eight seasons. Last season, they finished with the third-best record in the Western Conference (53-29), trailing only the Grizzlies (56-26) and Suns (64-18). The team lost several players, including Gary Payton II and Otto Porter Jr., in free agency, but still had a core group.
Last year’s Lakers campaign was a disappointment. The team suffered several injuries to key players that prevented the star trio of Russell Westbrook, LeBron James and Anthony Davis – along with the supporting cast – from developing chemistry. They finished 11th in the West in ages 33-49.
The general NBA schedule is expected to be released in the near future. Other schedule-related news also includes the Lakers, as veteran NBA reporter Marc Stein reported (via Twitter) that they may visit the Mavericks on Christmas Day this year.
